Learn how to use Second Sender to test and optimize your email campaigns in HubSpot.
đź“‘ Quick Navigation
Overview
Second Sender is a HubSpot app that helps you test and optimize your email campaigns through A/B testing. The workflow is simple:
- Select emails from your HubSpot account that you want to test
- Optimize — the system creates variants (clones) of those emails with different subject lines
- Send variants to your contact lists as A/B tests
- Review results and performance metrics
- Declare a winner and send the best performer to remaining contacts
Dashboard Tab
The Dashboard is your home screen. It shows a quick overview of your Second Sender activity with counters for:
📧 Emails

Select Email Tab
Browsing Your Emails
The Select Email tab lets you browse all emails in your HubSpot account and choose which ones to optimize.
Filtering
Use filters to narrow down your email list:
- Open Rate — Filter by minimum open rate
- Click-Through Rate — Filter by minimum CTR
- Delivered Count — Filter by minimum/maximum sent volume
- Subject Contains — Filter by keyword in subject line
- Show Dismissed Only — View emails you've previously dismissed
Selecting for Optimization
Click the "Optimize" button next to any email to select it for testing. The system will create subject line variants and prepare them for sending.
Optimize Openers Tab
In the Optimize Openers tab, you review email variants that have been created by the system.
What You'll See
- The original email you selected
- Generated subject line variants
- Preview of each variant
- Evaluation status (rating/feedback on each variant)
Your Actions
Review Variants: Read through each generated subject line variant and preview how it looks.
Authorize Sending: Check the box next to each variant you want to send. Only authorized variants will be queued for delivery.
Results Tab
The Results tab shows all your active A/B tests and performance metrics.
Viewing Results
Results are organized by parent email (the original) and child variants (the test versions). For each email group, you'll see:
- Control email — unsent original baseline
- Variant emails — modified versions being tested
- Performance metrics — open rate, click rate, delivery count
- Status — Pending, Sending, or Complete
Declaring a Winner
After the wait period (default 2-3 days), you can declare a winner:
- Review performance metrics for all variants
- Select the best-performing variant
- Click "Mark as Winner"
- Send the winner email to remaining unsent contacts
Wait Period
By default, there is a 2-3 day wait period before you can declare a winner. This gives enough time for contacts to open and engage with both versions.
Best Practices
🎯 Choose the Right Emails
Select emails with moderate performance (5-40% open rate). These typically show the most measurable improvement from subject line testing.
⏱️ Allow Time for Data
Wait the full configured period before declaring a winner. This ensures you have enough engagement data to make an informed decision.
📊 Review Metrics Carefully
Look at both open rates AND click-through rates. Sometimes a lower open rate with higher engagement per opener is the real winner.
🔄 Test Frequently
Run multiple tests across different types of emails and audiences. Each test teaches you something about your contacts' preferences.
Quick FAQs
What emails can I optimize?
Any email in your HubSpot account is eligible. We recommend choosing emails with at least some prior send history so you have baseline metrics to compare against.
Can I edit the variant subject lines?
Variants are generated automatically. If you'd like to modify a variant before sending, contact your administrator.
How many variants are created per email?
This depends on your configuration. Your administrator can set the number of variants created during optimization.
What happens to the losing variants?
Losing variants are archived after a winner is declared. They're kept for reference but not sent to additional contacts.
